There are interesting facts to be found for each of the hundreds of thousands of beetle species, but that would take a long time to get through. Instead, these are three of the most common beetle species in Missouri.
Japanese Beetles – Popillia japonica
Many people may recognize this half-inch-long beetle as a frequent visitor of their summer gardens. It has shiny green coloring, contrasted by their brown wing covers. They only live for about two months, and they spend much of that time on the plants that are in direct sunlight. Japanese beetles devour the inner parts of the leaves and lay their eggs, about forty to sixty total, in the soil underneath. They die off before the autumn chill sets in, but Japanese beetles certainly make their mark during their short lives.
Varied Carpet Beetles – Anthrenus verbasci
Carpet beetles are some of the least visible beetles around, but they can cause issues in the most areas. They are about three millimeters long, with a mottled pattern of black, white, brown, and yellow. Since it can take up to three years for their eggs to develop, varied carpet beetles can stay hidden in the attic or other isolated rooms for years. Their favorite meals are dead insects, carpeting, upholstery, hair, and organic foods. They are not dangerous, but varied carpet beetles can put enough holes in clothing and carpeting to frustrate anyone.
Ash Bark Beetles – Hylesinus spp.
This is one of the notable beetle species that will not last long indoors if they are accidentally brought in. Ash bark beetles are two to four millimeters long and dark gray, with black markings to camouflage themselves further. They tunnel deeper into the wood under the bark as soon as they become larvae, crafting intricate tunnels that lead away from the egg galleries. Ash bark beetles attack trees weakened by disease or age, and typically invade pre-cut trees. When a tree is infested with these beetles, it will have small entry and exit holes on the bark, and may even produce a wandering ash bark beetle once in a while.
It can feel overwhelming to think of all the beetles that live on Earth. Keeping beetles out of your home should be as straightforward as possible, which is why Pointe Pest Control is here to keep your home beetle-free.
