Common Belleville Ant Species

It may seem like ants are the same red or black food-loving insects regardless of the species, but there are actually some defining differences between each type of ant. In Belleville alone, there are 3 main ant species with their own clear preferences and personalities:

Pavement ants may live under concrete – true to their name – but they can still be an absolute nuisance in the home. They will venture far from their home to find food and can slip in between the smallest of cracks due to their short length of ⅛ of an inch. Surprisingly, pavement ants have small stingers that they use as their main defense against any predators. Their favorite foods are grease and meat, which explains why pavement ants are a common problem for restaurants located in the middle of the city.

Odorous house ants are predictably a major house pest, especially in the summer when they are desperate to escape the heat and find food. They are one of the few common ant species that can live fully inside a house, as they hide their colonies under the flooring or within the walls. Odorous house ants are typically found in the kitchen, as these dark ants enjoy just about any kind of food found in our homes. They may seem harmless, but the odor they emit definitely isn’t; odorous house ants can smell like bleu cheese or rotten coconut when they are squashed!

Carpenter ants are a different pest entirely. Instead of living in a typical ant hill, they live inside the tunnels they carve in damaged wood. As opposed to termites, carpenter ants do not consume the wood they chew through. Their sharp mandibles carve out smooth tunnels and discard the shavings outside of their habitat, which is consequently the first sign of a carpenter ant invasion. They forage for food at night, specifically searching for sweets and meat, and these ½ inch long ants will stop at nothing to create their nest and feed their colony.
