As previously mentioned, cockroaches are extremely durable and one of the most difficult pests to eliminate. They have gradually evolved to become immune to traditional pesticides, so it will not do to simply spray some insecticide around the house. In fact, this could make them retreat even further into hiding. Roaches of all species like to stay hidden among the shadows in general, hence why they are nocturnal and are the most active at night. Roaches are positively thigmotactic, meaning they can compress everything in their bodies to fit into impossibly tight spaces. Roaches also live in family groups and use pheromones to communicate with each other. If the treatment is ineffective, they will produce alert pheromones and either scatter or retreat further into the darkness.
Roaches even prefer moisture, so they are most often found in places with a leak, like the corners of basements and garages. They will retreat to the spots underneath furniture and behind appliances when the light turns on or a larger creature enters the space. Besides shadowy shelters, roaches have other advantages that make them much more difficult to treat than other pests. They can swim and hold their breath for up to 40 minutes, so it is unproductive to try and drown them with water. These pests breathe through spiracles – holes in their body segments – which is how they can hold their breath for so long. This feature is also the reason why they can infamously live without their heads. Roaches can technically live for a week if their heads are removed, since the air will continue flowing through their spiracles.
