The trouble with mosquitoes stems from two main issues: rapid reproduction and disease transmission. Mosquitoes prefer for their egg-laying sites to be warm or humid, and have any amount of fresh water. This includes a puddle, pond, lake, dog’s water dish, filled bucket, soaked tarp, or even overwatered soil. Once they have a site and mate, mosquitoes can lay at least 100 eggs at a time. The early life stages completely live in the water and only leave once they develop into adults. Mosquitoes can lay about 3 groups of 100-200 eggs in their short lives, which means that a backyard infestation could make for a miserable time spent outside in the O’Fallon sun.
As for the disease transmission, this only occurs when a mosquito has previously bitten an infected mammal. Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes do not transmit diseases by injecting their next host with the infected blood. Rather, the mosquito acts as a vector for the disease and passes it through its saliva while feeding. There are hundreds of thousands of fatal disease cases per year that are linked back to mosquito bites. Some of the common mosquito-transmitted diseases include malaria, yellow fever, Zika virus, West Nile virus, and Dengue virus. Between the risk of disease and the itchy welts that every female mosquito leaves behind, these insects are not exactly welcome guests.
