Summary: Practical winter checklist to keep pests out for a pest-free winter by sealing entry points, protecting food and water, and organizing high risk spaces.

Cold weather sends pests looking for warmth, water, and easy meals. If your home has gaps, clutter, or cozy hiding spots, winter invaders will find them fast.
Use this room to room checklist to protect your space before the temperature drops. A few smart fixes now will pay off all season with quieter walls, cleaner pantries, and fewer surprise visitors.
Seal Exterior Entry Points First

Winter pests enter through tiny openings that are easy to miss. Focus on the places pests use as highways, like utility penetrations, door sweeps, foundation gaps, and attic vents. A pencil wide space is all a mouse needs, and insects need even less.
Walk the outside of your home in daylight, then again at dusk with a flashlight. Look for light shining through door thresholds, gaps where pipes meet siding, loose weather stripping, and torn screens. Seal with waterproof exterior grade caulk, install or replace door sweeps, and add ¼ inch hardware cloth behind vents to keep wildlife out.
What to seal:
- Foundation cracks and gaps along siding
- Door thresholds and garage door bottoms
- Utility lines and hose bibs where pipes meet walls
- Attic and crawlspace vents with missing or loose screens
Protect Food and Water Sources Indoors

Food attracts rodents and insects quickly in cold months. Transfer dry goods to hard sided airtight containers, wipe shelves, and rotate older items forward so nothing lingers. Clean under appliances where crumbs collect, and empty small trash cans nightly.
Water is just as important to pests as food. Fix slow drips, add drain stoppers at night in kitchen and baths, and run the bathroom fan after showers to remove excess humidity. In basements, use a dehumidifier to keep moisture down and storage safe.
Kitchen storage shortlist
- Glass or acrylic containers with tight lids for flour, rice, and pet food
- Shelf liners you can wipe clean, plus labeled bins for snacks
- A 10 minute nightly wipe down of counters, sink, and stovetop
Hard to Reach Spaces: Attic, Basement, and Garage

Rodents love quiet places with insulation to shred. In the attic, check around the hatch, exposed wiring, and eaves for daylight or droppings. Replace loose insulation pads and keep boxes off the floor on sturdy shelving.
In basements and garages, store seldom used items in lidded plastic totes, not cardboard. Sweep cobwebs, remove stacked newspapers, and keep stacked firewood outside on a rack at least 20 feet from the foundation.
Yard and Exterior Clean Up

Trim bushes and tree branches back at least a foot from the house so pests cannot bridge the gap. Clear leaf piles that hold moisture near siding, and keep gutters flowing so water does not collect along the foundation.
Check window wells, doorlights, and porch lights. Swap to warm color bulbs if possible, which are less attractive to many flying insects than bright white bulbs. Tidy the area around HVAC pads and propane tanks where weeds and debris collect.
Pet and Firewood Habits That Help

Pet food left out all day is a winter buffet. Feed on a schedule and store kibble in a sealed bin. Rinse bowls nightly and keep the feeding area dry.
Bring firewood inside only as needed. Wood can shelter spiders and beetles when stacked indoors for long periods. Knock pieces together outdoors to dislodge hitchhikers before you carry them in.
