Although American cockroaches are larger than German roaches by a full inch, they do not make themselves visible nearly as often. American roaches prefer hiding spots that are completely dark and damp, and they will travel quite far from their birthplace to find that. Their most common habitats include drains, basements, sewers, and garbage cans. American cockroaches are red-brown and have a yellow band around their neck that separates them from darker-colored roaches. Even though they have wings, these roaches prefer to crawl around on the disgusting surfaces they are drawn to, thus accumulating even more dangerous bacteria.
