Spiders reproduce at a rapid rate like most pests, but their offspring enter this world a bit differently. Spiders can lay up to 3,000 eggs in their lifetimes and prefer to produce as many as possible to aid in the survival of their species. A female spider will only produce eggs in a place that they deem is safe. Many common Shiloh spider species keep their eggs contained in an egg sac until they are ready to hatch. These sacs are made of spider silk that the mother spins into multiple layers for ultimate protection. She can either put all of the eggs into one, or split them up into smaller egg sacs.
Now, what the spider does with its egg sac varies with each species. The web-builders typically stick their egg sacs to their web and guard it until it hatches. Black widows are one of the more famous examples of this since they perch on their webs and wait for prey anyway. Hunting spiders are different since they don’t usually build a web for themselves. They can either stick the egg sac to their current hiding spot, such as behind a box or piece of furniture, or carry it with them. The brown recluse tends to keep it in their shelter, while the wolf spider opts to carry their egg sac on their back. This becomes quite the sight when the eggs hatch and the female wolf spider carries her hundreds of offspring on her back!
